Ancient Greek Language Program:

Stage One

Learning takes place primarily through listening and speaking, using teaching materials developed by Prof. Christophe Rico at the Polis Institute in Jerusalem, Israel. In addition, we begin reading and practicing spoken Ancient Greek with the first volume of Athenaze, using a collated version that combines the English and Italian editions. (No knowledge of Italian is required to use the textbook.) You can view the first chapter of the reader I compiled from these two editions of the Athenaze here.

Stage Two

We begin reading the second volume of Athenaze while continuing to practice spoken Ancient Greek throughout the course. By the end of this stage, the student will have attained an intermediate level of proficiency in Ancient Greek.

Stage Three

After completing the second volume of Athenaze, we transition to reading original texts. At this stage, the course may proceed along one of three parallel paths:

α) We begin reading the Iliad and focuse on the Homeric dialect.

β) We begin reading Classical Greek prose authors, supported by supplementary materials and focus on the Attic dialect (Xenophon, Plato, etc.).

γ) We begin reading Hellenistic texts and explore the Koine dialect (Septuagint, New Testament, etc.).
