Hi, my name is Tom Lerner. I teach English and Ancient Greek online, and I have been teaching Ancient Greek for 14 years.

At the beginner level, my approach to teaching is speaking-centered. This means that my students learn the fundamentals of Ancient Greek primarily through listening and speaking, much as they would learn a modern language. From the very beginning, they also learn to read, but the emphasis is on actively using the language. This approach not only enables faster language acquisition but also leads to a much deeper understanding of the language than the traditional grammar translation method.

Beyond the elementary level, instruction becomes increasingly reading-centered. My students read extensively, with only the minimum grammatical explanation necessary. The goal remains active engagement with the language, so that students learn to understand Greek directly—"through their ears," so to speak— rather than by relying primarily on grammatical analysis.
